The following essay was written 11 years ago, as the Linux operating system was starting to be taken seriously by people other than propeller-heads. Since that time, Linux has received substantial acceptance by the business and IT community as a reliable server platform. But Linux still constitutes a tiny fraction of the market for personal computer operating systems. Proof of this fact is the small number of desktops and laptops from major manufacturers with Linux pre-installed.
